The government shutdown is already causing trouble for travelers. Due to lack of funding, the FAA is experiencing staffing shortages at several major airports including Chicago, Nashville, Dallas and Newark.
Air traffic controllers are continuing to work without pay, and some have called in sick under stress. The U.S. Transportation Secretary said staffing in some locations is down to just 50 percent. So far, more than 3,200 flights have been delayed.
Union leaders say the pressure on aviation workers is building and could make travel this weekend even more unpredictable.
