The NAACP has filed a lawsuit against the state of Texas over a new electoral map that civil rights advocates say is racially discriminatory. The lawsuit alleges that the redistricting effort was designed to dilute the voting power of Black communities in Texas ahead of the 2026 midterm elections.
NAACP President and CEO Derrick Johnson issued a statement calling the maps “a direct attempt to suppress Black voices at the ballot box.” He highlighted that while white residents make up only 40 percent of Texas’ population, they control more than 73 percent of the state’s congressional districts. This, he argued, reflects an imbalance that undermines democratic representation.
The organization is seeking a federal court injunction to prevent the maps from being used in the next election cycle. Voting rights advocates have rallied behind the lawsuit, calling it a necessary step to ensure fair and equal representation for all Texans.
