Today is April 15, also known as Tax Day, the deadline for most Americans to file their federal income tax returns. But if you live in certain areas that were hit by natural disasters, you may have more time to file.
According to Today.com, the IRS has extended the tax filing deadline for people in Florida, Georgia, Alabama, North Carolina, and South Carolina because of recent storms and other natural events. In Los Angeles County, the deadline has been moved to October 15 due to the wildfires that affected the region.
Your taxes are due today if you do not live in one of those states. As MSN.com points out, it is important to consider any big life changes that happened in 2024 when filing your taxes. This could include getting married, having a baby, starting a side business, selling or buying a home, inheriting an IRA, or receiving unemployment benefits.
These changes can impact how much you owe or what kind of refund you receive. If you are not ready to file just yet, you can still apply for an extension. But do not forget, an extension to file is not an extension to pay.
