The Strawberry Letter: I Live In Party City, So I'm Outside

Dear Steve and Shirley,

I’ve been married for seven months to a man significantly younger than I am. I met him in Cancún while vacationing with my son and his family. I shocked everyone when I decided to get a condo in Cancún and rent out my house in St. Louis. My family acted like, because I’m over 60 and a plus-size woman, there’s no way this younger man could possibly love me.

As soon as I got the keys to my condo, I moved in with him. All we do is hang out and have a good time. This is my third marriage; my last husband passed away in 2022. I live in “party city,” so I’m always out and about. Some days I sleep until noon, and it drives my family crazy.

The other day, my oldest daughter and I were on a video call when my husband came home from the night before. All she could say was that he’s cheating on me and using me for my money. For the record, I don’t have a lot of money, but what I do have is mine. He makes me feel good about myself for the first time in many years.

My family expected me to waste away alone in St. Louis, dealing with those cold winters, but God had other plans for me. Over here in Mexico, my size isn’t an issue, and men tell me I’m beautiful all the time.

Now here’s my problem: my husband wants his mother to move in with us. She’s 12 years older than me and a complete party pooper. I enjoy being outside in the streets and having intimate moments with my husband on our terrace. I know she’ll ruin the good thing we have going on. My children are convinced he’s slowly going to move all his family in on me.

How do I tell my husband his mama can’t come live with us? Are my kids right about him?

Please advise.
