UPDATE (1/16/18): A spokesperson for the City of Chicago told TMZ that officials did, in fact, "find building code violations," including evidence that the recording studio is being used for residential purposes. Sources also told the gossip site that "officials discovered work that had been done inside without approved plans or permits." The city will now reportedly file "an amended complaint against R. Kelly for a future court hearing."

R. Kelly's Chicago studio was swarmed by Chicago PD on Wednesday (January 16). However, it had nothing to do with the on-going criminal investigation against the 52-year-old singer.

According to TMZ, police arrived at Kelly's studio because he was allegedly using it as a residence, which is illegal. Law enforcement sources told the gossip site, Chicago PD showed up with the Cook County Building and Zoning Department because the building is only zoned for industrial use, which means if anyone is living there, it's a major problem.

As for what caused the police to be present for what was, in essence, a zone inspection, it's reportedly common to have police officers accompany the Building Department on such matters. An insider made sure to make it clear that officers did not just go to the building —which Kelly reportedly owes $166k in back rent on and is currently facing eviction before the month's end — because it's Kelly's place.

As previously reported, Kelly, who has denied all allegations of sexual abuse or misconduct against him, is currently under criminal investigation following the airing of Surviving R. Kelly. The three-part docu-series detailed harrowing recounts of Kelly's alleged sexual abuse — told by seven alleged survivors — over the last 20-plus years.

In the days after its airing, many artists responded by not only denouncing Kelly's alleged actions but by pulling their previous collaborations with him off music streaming services. Lady Gaga, Celine Dion, The Pussycat Dolls, Chance the Rapper and Ciara are just a few of the artists who have either pulled their R. Kelly featured tracks, or are in the middle of doing so.
