8 Things You May Have Missed In Angie Martinez' Conversation With J. Cole

1. J. Cole Said If He Could Do College Over Again He Would Go To an HBCU

In many of his songs Cole has detailed how he went to New York for college attending St John's University. One of the biggest reasons he went to college up there was because of the opportunities that were available which eventually worked out as he was signed to Jay-Z only years later. Reflecting on his college years he revealed that if he could do it all over again he wouldn't have attended the Queen's private college but instead an HBCU. 

2. Contrary To Popular Belief "KOD" was Inspired By The New Generation of Hip-Hop 

While many people on the internet have interpreted much of Cole's recent music as a dis towards to new generation of hip-hop, in his conversation with Angie Cole actually says that this generation has inspired his new music, even citing that he things Young Thug is a genius!

3. Cole Related Quitting Drinking to Social Media Addiction

Social media has clearly become one of the biggest issues for this generation but somehow rappers such as Cole and Kendrick Lamar have to manage to stay off social media only returning when their album drops. J Cole himself has been spending a lot of time on twitter lately and in the conversation with Angie, he spoke about how similar our addiction to our phones is to his attempt to quit drinking. His biggest point was that he wanted to be in control of all his actions and feelings so he encourages the youth to realize that there are outside influences affecting them

but somebody has to make them aware that something is pulling the strings, that's what I don't like, something pulling my strings". 

4. J Cole Reveals The significance behind "Kill Edward" 

When he first released the tracklist for the new project fans were a bit confused as the rapper who has been known now to not have featured on his album had a feature from a mysterious artist by the name of Kill Edward. As it turns out the artist was indeed Cole himself and in the interview with Angie, he talks what inspired that character stating he was partially tired of talking about himself all the time. The name stems from his stepfather's name "Edward" not that Cole wants to kill his stepfather but rather kill all the things that he inherited from him. 

"to kill the shit that I inherited from him. There's aspects of myself... shit that I want to overcome and beat, that I got from him."

5. For The First Time Ever He Spoke About Being a Father + Revealed The Gender Of His Child

There have been rumors for some time that Cole had become a father to a baby girl after his tracks on "4 Your Eyez Only" only made the case stronger that he and his longtime girlfriend now wife had a child together. 

Although Cole has never confirmed the sex of his child speaking to Angie about the purpose and a deeper meaning in life, the rapper said, "I just got done doing this album, where every day I have a purpose beyond clearly my obvious purpose as a father, as a husband. But, I feel like I've created a life where my purpose is too placed in music. Where I put too much of my purpose in music... to when I come home, outside of playing with my son, if I go three days without doing music... I start to feel, like, miserable."

Its never to late to say congrats on your son Cole!! 

6. He is Trying to Incorporate Meditation into his daily life

Part of Cole's routine when he is about to perform is that he always takes 5-10 minute for himself especially to help calm his anxiety. As he wants this to become more of his daily life Cole said:  "I do it when a little or a lot of anxiety, that's what I don't like about myself I want to become disciplined so it becomes apart of my life and something that I do every day"

7. His Mom Wanted Him To Tell Her Story of Drug Addiction. "Look, my story maybe could help somebody"

On his album "KOD" there was an interlude titled "Once an Addict", in which he raps about his mother's former drug addiction. This isn't the first time Cole has addressed it but in the conversation he revealed that his mom actually wanted him to tell her story that way it could help others.

"She was like, 'Look, my story maybe could somebody. I'm not ashamed of nothing, so tell my story'"  

8. J. Cole Doesn't Hate Rappers Who Screamed "Fuck J. Cole"

While rappers like Smokepurpp are out here having their fan start F*** J. Cole chants, Cole doesn't actually hate them at all saying "First of all, I F*** with them, I actually f*** with their music. It's not like I drive around and listen to it, but I've spent time like, listening and being like, 'Yo, this is fun.' It ain't about s***, and that don't matter. This is fun."
