They call it “The Happiest Place On Earth”. Being here, you would never know the world is in the middle of a health crisis.
Each year I broadcast live from Walt Disney World in support of Disney Dreamers Academy with Steve Harvey and Essence Magazine. This year three Metro Detroit area high school students were chosen to spend an incredible 4-day weekend with various celebrities and mentors that will challenge them to dream big!
Ahead of this trip, the coronavirus had made its way to Michigan. I was concerned about traveling, but I figured the virus is in Michigan anyway, I might as well take the trip. I packed up my entire family, husband and two children, and we headed to Orlando.
The night we arrived the coronavirus story exploded. Officials classified it as an epidemic, the NBA suspended the rest of the season, Tom Hanks and his wife announced they were infected, and President Trump declared a travel ban on Europe. My concern increased. My family and I were almost 1200 miles away from home.
Following the broadcast yesterday, we tried to make the best of it. We went to a couple parks and they were all full. People were happy and very pleasant. It was a great escape from the depressing news of the day. Then it happened. I received word that the entire Disney Dreamers Academy was being suspended. Shortly after, it was announced that Disneyland in California was set to close, then soon after, Disney World announced that they will close on Sunday, the day we are scheduled to head home. My concern for my family increased even more. I just wanted to come home!!
I immediately got on the phone and attempted to change our flights to leave as soon as possible, but the wait time to speak with someone was 6-hours!! I conceded that there was nothing left to do but make the best of it. So, we are still here.
Although I am extremely concerned about my family and the state of the world, I refuse to live in fear. None of us can do that! We must stay vigilant, take as many precautions as we can, and remain faithful. Move in faith, not fear. God bless us all!
