Bruno Mars Opens BET Awards With Swagged-Out 'Perm' Performance (VIDEO)

Bruno Mars performed “Perm” to start the 2017 BET Awards on Sunday.

Roughly halfway into the year, Mars has spent much of 2017 making the rounds at awards shows. As Gossip Cop reported, the singer performed twice at the Grammys in February, first doing “That’s What I Like” and then taking the stage again for a stellar Prince tribute. Days later, he brought “That’s What I Like” to the Brit Awards, and then also performed it at the iHeartRadio Music Awards in March. At that same show, Mars was honored with the Innovator Award. Most recently, Mars sang “Versace On The Floor” at last month’s Billboard Music Awards.

At the end of May, Mars was among the first performers announced for the BET Awards ceremony, along with Future, Migos, Trey Songz and Tamar Braxton. And then this past Friday, two days before the big show, host Leslie Jones revealed Mars had the kick-off slot. “I told y’all we would start our wonderful life together, that’s why @BrunoMars and I are opening up the 2017 #BETAwards @BETAwards,” she wrote on Twitter, a message the performer retweeted.

Mars went into tonight’s event as the second-most nominated star, following Beyonce, who is not in attendance this evening due to the recent birth of her twins. Mars scored five nods, including Album of the Year and Video of the Year, for 24K Magic and “24K Magic,” respectively. He is also up for the fan-voted Coca-Cola Viewers’ Choice Award, as well as Best Male R&B/Pop Artist. Mars’ final nomination is for Video Director of the Year, as he co-helmed the clip for “That’s What I Like” with Jonathan Lia.
